Read English at Cambridge, then spent five years in Paris as assistant at the Lycées Henri IV and Condorcet. His first novel, Vacation, was published in 1972, his Michel Foucault: The Will to Truth in 1980. His widely acclaimed biography André Gide: A Life in the Present (Hamish Hamilton and Harvard University Press) appeared in 1998 and in Penguin and Harvard paperbacks in 2000. His novel Time and Place was published by Scribner in hardback in 2003 and in paperback in 2004. He is now working on a sequel, Other Times, Other Places. He has translated over fifty books, including works by Sartre, Lacan, Foucault, Robbe-Grillet and Pinget.
